Welcome from our Chief Executive Officer

I am delighted to welcome you to Congleton Multi-Academy Trust (Cmat). Our aim across these website pages is to introduce you to this happy and successful family of schools and also provide a comprehensive overview of our Trust.

As founding CEO, I am immensely proud of the continued progress and success of all of our schools. In 2018, Congleton High School was jointly the highest performing secondary school in the whole of Cheshire and continues to maintain its strong position. Previously, Castle Primary School celebrated its ranking in the top two per cent of primary schools in the country for attainment in Mathematics. Black Firs Primary School’s unique holistic curriculum and enviable sporting record also ensure it is one of the most popular and oversubscribed schools in the area. The Oaks Academy became the newest member of the Cmat family in November 2019, increasing the Trust by 27%, and the school is already benefiting from the expertise, support and resources provided by our team.

What we do

We care for and educate 2,000 children, aged three to eighteen, across Cheshire and Staffordshire. These young people are our main focus and the whole Cmat team is committed to delivering outstanding education, providing for them the best possible opportunities and outcomes. The success of our alumni, many of whom have completed both their primary and secondary education in Cmat schools, is testament to this.

Our team

Across the Trust, children and their families benefit from the experience and expertise of our strong team of 300 teaching and support colleagues who work closely together, within individual schools and throughout Cmat. Many of our team joined us early in their career, have taken on new challenges along the way and progressed to senior leadership roles. In turn, these colleagues now serve to inspire and mentor younger team members to achieve their own goals.

Our history

Cmat was originally formed in February 2014 when Congleton High School made the transition from a single academy to a multi-academy. In June 2014, Black Firs Primary School became the first school to join Cmat. Currently, these two schools alone are responsible for the care and education of around a third of all Congleton children.

Keen to be part of this growing and successful family, high-performing Staffordshire primary school, Castle, joined us in March 2015, enabling its pupils and staff to enjoy the many benefits of joining a MAT including a wide range of specialist teaching and learning collaborations.

In 2016, the Department for Education approved Cmat as a New Academy Sponsor and subsequently chose us to sponsor The Oaks Academy in Crewe in 2019.

Our future

Looking to the future, the recent rapid and continuous housing growth in our area, particularly across Congleton, will require at least one new school to be established soon. We hope that our Trust, with its strong track record of success and progress, will be called upon to deliver this for our communities.

These are exciting times in education and I am proud that we are meeting the challenges head on and spearheading new developments for the benefit of all of our children and young people.

A word from our Chair, Vic Croxson DL

DSC07948

When considering our core purpose and longer term vision, it occurred to our team of school Governors and Trustees that the acronym, ‘Cmat’, represents not just the registered name of Congleton Multi-Academy Trust but also stands for “Children matter, achieving together,” This has provided a clear focus for our Trust.

Serving the needs of those who learn, teach and support the 2000 children in Cmat schools is the driver for the many volunteers who are members of the local governing bodies of our schools and directors on our Board of Trustees.

It is an honour and privilege for me to chair this Board. As with all of our school governing bodies, the Cmat Board benefits from a team of enormously talented people. Although they all lead busy lives, Governors and Trustees volunteer and devote significant time and expertise to ensure that the policies and procedures governing Cmat’s activities meet and exceed the needs of all who learn and work in Cmat Schools.

We are all proud of what we achieve together!
